About Ventės Ragas Ornithological Station

Ventės Ragas Ornithological Station is situated along the western shore of the Curonian Lagoon, near the village of Ventė Cape in Lithuania. Established in 1929, it is one of the oldest bird ringing stations in Europe and holds a vital role in avian migration research. The station is strategically positioned on a narrow spit of land between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon, making it an excellent vantage point for observing migratory bird species traveling across this flyway. The ecology here is characterized by wetland habitats, reed beds, sand dunes, and coastal meadows that support a diverse array of bird species including numerous waterfowl, raptors, and waders. It serves as an important resting and feeding site for migratory birds during spring and autumn migrations. Visitors and researchers alike come to the station to witness large-scale bird ringing activities, learn about bird conservation, and explore the unique coastal ecosystems. The station is operated by the Lithuanian Ornithological Society and offers educational exhibitions, guided tours, and birdwatching platforms. While primarily a scientific facility, the station's surroundings provide accessible trails for birdwatching and nature photography. Ventės Ragas is celebrated for its long-standing contribution to avian science and conservation across Northern Europe and plays a key role in international bird monitoring networks.
